Australia, where rooftop solar was the big winner till last year, continues to make big strides in redressing the balance with the South Australia government approving a huge project in Goyder South for wind, solar and battery storage. The project, once completed, is expected to take the state to a net 100 percent figure for renewable power supplies
French developer Neoen is working on the Goyder South project. Neoen has established itself well in Australia, starting with the trend setting Hornsdale wind farm and Hornsdale big battery, besides some big project wins last year. Interestingly, Indian EPC Sterling and Wilson Solar has been a partner for some of Neoen’s key projects
The $3 billion Goyder South project will have up to 1200MW of wind energy, 600MW of solar, and up to 900MW of battery capacity, with likely two hours of storage (1,800MWh)
For Australia, which, as the world’s largest coal exporter, has been under pressure to clean up, the shift to renewable energy internally, and explore ways to maintain its ‘energy exports’ has taken a decisive shift this year
Even in this case, the local power minister noted that the early closure of the Yallourn brown coal fired power station in Victoria presented a big opportunity for SA to grab a position as a key exporter of renewable power
Neoen hopes to begin construction of the first stage of the project, which will total up to 400MW, in the second half of 2022
Along with the Goyder South project, planning approval has also been given to Origin Energy’s planned 150MW Morgan solar farm, which will also include a big battery
